First Assembly of God

Notes from Pastor Jerry Sept 2017

Has anyone complained to you about the weather lately? When the temperature gauge reaches 100 degrees + you know that summer is here! Here in our sultry mid-Missouri summers it can be difficult just breathing when humidity levels read the same as the temperature.

My personal favorite is just around the corner- fall. The crisp air and vibrant fall colors make for a rich day of living. Besides the fashion display of color, the tell-tale sign of fall is seeing your breath. When you walk out into the cool crisp morning air and you put the keys into the ignition, frosty air wafts up in front of your face each time you breathe. You know it’s fall! We normally don’t “see” our breath. But when the temperature changes, we see visible evidence that we are “alive”.

God has a record of using breath to initiate life and great events of His choosing in Gen 2:7

the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Gen2:7(NIV).

God used His very breath to give life to Adam. This life would not have had a soul unless God had done this. We are living souls, living spirits inside a shell of clay. God caused us to breathe perpetually until life is finished. There is life in the breath.

When Jesus had gone through the crucifixion and arose from the grave, He appeared to His disciples in a room in which they were all gathered. He was there to commission them for service in His Kingdom. Just as God understood the importance of breathing into Adam for life, Jesus instituted His church with the breathing on of His Disciples.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:21-22 (NIV)

Theologians have conversed for years whether they received the fullness of the Spirit at this time. For sure, this was the initiation of the coming work of the Church. We know that there is life in breath, for without breath death comes soon. When Jesus breathed on them they were commissioned with life to share in His great mission of spreading God’s love, message of forgiveness, and hope of eternity, and the Holy Spirit found a new dwelling place.

hat breath was soon to become the fulfillment of God’s promise of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost, God sent His “breath” in the form of the Holy Spirit to descend upon each believer. Tongues of fire landed upon the head of each believer present and gave them the utterance to speak in unknown languages. What an incredible, supernatural event to take place in the lives of human beings! God has been breathing into His disciples since the beginning of time. And before His great and glorious return, He is pouring out His Spirit one more time to give life again to His followers. Those who have run out of oxygen gasp for air. Those whose lungs have become damaged, gasp for precious air. Believers who have walked into smoke-filled hallways of life gasp for the air of life. They gasp for the breath of Jesus. Are you getting enough oxygen into your spiritual bloodstream? Or are you gasping like many around you who do not know real life. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Can you see your breath!

In Christ,
Pastor Jerry
